Our A Level Art students recently had an incredible opportunity to delve into the world of stone carving with professional sculptor David Williams (@sculptedinstone).
In preparation for the workshop, students explored their personal themes through drawing and developed a series of clay maquettes. This important pre-work allowed them to think three-dimensionally and begin visualising how their designs could be transformed through the subtractive process of stone carving – a completely new and exciting medium for them.
David’s expert guidance and enthusiasm allowed students to gain not only practical sculpting skills but also a deeper understanding of form, texture, and the discipline required to shape such a resistant material.

The results were outstanding. Not only did each student produce a unique piece that reflected their individual artistic voice, but the sculptures will also significantly enrich their A Level portfolios.
