Approaches to Learning

A research-informed approach

We are committed to fostering a love of learning in every pupil. Centred on individualised learning, our approach recognises that each child is unique, tailoring our teaching methods to meet the needs of our learners. We focus not only on academic excellence but also on developing strong learning skills they can carry throughout life.

As a research-informed school, we integrate the latest educational research into our teaching practices to ensure that our methods are effective and evidence-based. We employ innovative teaching strategies, ensuring that our lessons remain rigorous and engaging, fostering an environment where every pupil can thrive.

Being one of a select few Microsoft Showcase Schools puts us at the fore of digital education; our teachers use technology to augment the learning experience, both inside and outside the classroom, ensuring that pupils leave school as competent, digitally literate learners.

How learning happens

Understanding how children learn is fundamental to our learning vision. We combine insights from cognitive science, psychology, and educational research to develop evidence-based strategies.

Memory and Retention

Learning involves the process of encoding, storing, and retrieving information. We utilise techniques such as successive relearning and retrieval practice. Retrieval practice, which involves recalling information from memory, helps strengthen memory and enhance learning. Successive relearning involves engaging in retrieval practice multiple times, spaced out over time, to further reinforce learning and improve long-term retention.

Cognitive Load

To enhance our teaching methods, we incorporate principles from Cognitive Load Theory. This theory helps us understand how the brain processes information and the limitations of working memory. By managing cognitive load effectively, we can improve learning outcomes across our classes. We achieve this by structuring our explanations in chunks, checking understanding and using adaptive teaching. Recognising the importance of maximising the capacity of our working memory, we aim to create a focused learning environment, minimising distractions.

Metacognition

Encouraging pupils to think about their own thinking (metacognition) helps them become more aware of their learning processes and strategies. This self-awareness can lead to improvement in knowledge and understanding, thus increasing higher order thinking.

By integrating these principles into our teaching practices, we aim to create a learning environment that supports all learners in reaching their full potential.

Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum is designed to challenge and inspire pupils at every level. In Pre-Prep, we offer a play-based curriculum that encourages exploration and discovery. In Prep School, we provide a broad and balanced curriculum that includes core subjects like English, Maths, and Science, as well as Languages, Art, Music, and Physical Education. In Senior School, we offer a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for GCSEs and A Levels, with a strong emphasis on critical thinking and independent learning.
