The process by which children join Cokethorpe varies depending on the year group your child will be joining. The information below provides details of the requirements and deadlines for the process at each stage.

Preview Evening
Our Sixth Form Preview Evening usually takes place in October. The Preview Evening is an opportunity to meet Heads of Departments and view the Sixth Form Centre as well as hearing from the Head of Sixth Form and Director of Studies regarding entry to the Sixth Form.

Offers and Entry Requirements
Offers of Sixth Form places will be conditional on the achievement of appropriate grades in the final GCSE examinations.

The key entry point to Cokethorpe Prep School is Reception (4+).

Step 2: Register
Complete and return the Registration Form and non-refundable Registration Fee
(£120 per child). The Admissions Office will be in touch to discuss next steps with you.
Step 3: Entrance Assessments
Reception (4+)
Registered, prospective pupils are invited to a ‘Welcome to Reception’ event in the Summer Term in the year preceding year of entry. For example, you should attend an event in Summer 2025 for entry into Reception in September 2026.
There are no formal entrance assessments.
Entry to Other Year Groups
Where places become available in other year groups (Years 1 to 6), registered, prospective pupils are invited to a Prep School Taster Day.
Prep School Taster Days
These are half termly events for registered, prospective pupils. During these days, pupils are assessed in Maths and English and will have an interview with the Head of Prep, Mrs Black, as well as joining in with lessons, sport, and lunch.

Step 4: Offers
Following a successful ‘Welcome to Reception’ visit, offers for these limited places are extended thereafter on a first-come first-served basis.
Offers to Other Year Groups
Offers for entry into the Prep School are made following a successful outcome from the Prep School Taster Day.
Offers for a place in the Prep School are based primarily on the academic outcomes of the assessments. Reports from the pupil’s current school are also taken into consideration. Early registration is highly recommended as places are limited.

Senior School Entry
The main entry points into the Senior School are at First Form (11+), Third Form (13+),
and our 4-year GCSE and A Level Course (14+).

Step 3: Parent Information Evenings
During the Michaelmas Term parents of registered, prospective First and Third Form pupils are invited to join us to hear from the Headmaster, Registrar, Deputy Head and Director of Studies about life at Cokethorpe School and our expectations for our future First and Third Form. There is also the opportunity to hear from some of our current pupils about their own experiences of being part of Cokethorpe School.
Parents of First Form pupils will also hear from the Head of Lower House about how pupils are welcomed to the Senior School, and the Lower House Camp that takes place in the school grounds at the start of the academic year and is a wonderful introduction to life in the Senior School.
Step 4: Assessment Days
First Form Entrance Assessments
Registered, prospective pupils will be invited to take part in the First Form Entrance Assessments which take place in early February. The assessment and interview day will include online assessments in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. There will also be one-to-one interviews, group interviews, and practical assessments on the day.
Third Form Entrance Assessments
Registered, prospective Third Form pupils can apply to join the January assessments up to two years prior to the intended September start date. The assessment and interview day will include online assessments in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. There will also be one-to-one interviews, group interviews, and practical assessments on the day.
Four-Year GCSE and A Level Course
Registered, prospective pupils are invited to take part in an assessment which includes interviews and formal assessments in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Please contact the Admissions Office to find out more information and to book a place on one of our Entrance Assessment days.
Step 5: Offers
Places in the Senior School are typically offered within two weeks of sitting the assessments.
Offers for a place in the Senior School are based primarily on the academic outcomes of the assessments. Performance in interviews and practical assessments (where applicable) are factored in and Common Entrance results (where applicable) are welcomed. Reports from the pupil’s current school are also taken into consideration. Early registration is recommended.

Sixth Form Entry
Applications for places in our Sixth Form are welcomed and are offered conditionally upon the achievement of appropriate grades in the final GCSE examinations. Following registration, prospective students are invited to take park in a Sixth Form Experience Day. Following a successful visit, conditional offers are extended.

Following the Preview Evening, invitations are dispatched for prospective students to join us for a Sixth Form Experience Day,.
Step 4: Offers and Entry Requirements
Offers of Sixth Form places follow a successful Sixth Form Experience Day and will be conditional on both the achievement of appropriate GCSE examinations and the requirements relevant to the selected entry route:
Route 1: Three A Level subjects and the EPQ
Students will be expected to have achieved an average of at least 5.5 points in their GCSEs with the average based on the top eight grades gained at GCSE. Individual grade requirements in the subjects they wish to pursue will also be applicable.
Route 2: Four A Levels
Students will need to have achieved an average of at least 7 points in their GCSEs. Students who wish to study four subjects are invited to meet with the Director of Studies to discuss their chosen pathway.
Route 3: The Business BTEC programme
Students will be expected to have achieved an average of at least 5 points in their GCSEs, including a minimum of 4 in their English and Mathematics.
