Sport

An integral part of life at Cokethorpe School whether participating at recreational or at representative level.

Welcome to Cokethorpe Sport

Prep Sport

All Prep School sports sessions are delivered by a team of expert, qualified coaches who specialise in nurturing the talents, skills and passions of youth players. The children are able to use the fantastic sports facilities in the School and lessons take place in the sports hall, on the astroturf pitches or on the games pitches.

The wide range of sports offered is underpinned by an ethos of participation. Children of all abilities are encouraged to discover a sport they enjoy and to compete at a suitable level including Inter-House, School representative or purely recreational.

Children in the Pre-Prep focus on developing core skills using gymnastics for balance, movement and strength and ball games for co-ordination, strategy and team work. All of their new found skills are put to the test in a fun-packed mini-Olympics in the Summer Term.

From Year 3, boys and girls are taught separately and receive specialist Games coaching on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. These sessions cover the major sports of rugby, football, netball, cricket, hockey, rounders, athletics, tennis and cross country. Pupils are encouraged to stay for the additional coaching which is available from 4.00pm – 4.50pm on Tuesdays. There is a full programme of fixtures against other schools and, as a member of IAPS, the Prep School competes in the IAPS U11 age group and has enjoyed notable success including winning national competitions in squash, inland sailing, and swimming.

The pupils also come together for a range of sports in the PE lessons during the school day including mixed tag rugby, athletics, and tennis. These are complemented throughout the year by the Prep School activities programme which includes sporting opportunities, such as swimming, golf, dance, horse riding, and sailing.

Senior Sport

Sport is an integral part of life in the Senior School. Excellence at the highest level is underpinned by an ethos of participation. The wide range of sporting activities offer a balance of skills and physical demands so that every pupil can discover a sport they enjoy. Pupils of all abilities are encouraged to play meaningful and competitive sport at Inter-House, School Representative or purely recreational level. Through sport, pupils develop confidence and resilience by exposure to physical, technical and mental stimulus which provides the opportunity to develop strong teamwork and leadership skills.

The major sports of rugby, hockey, football, netball, cricket, tennis, equestrian and athletics are complemented by a range of other sports including , badminton, squash and golf . Elite players form the core of Cokethorpe’s first team squads and are well supported as they prepare to transition from youth level to the senior stage.

The parkland setting provides the perfect backdrop to the extensive facilities which contribute to Cokethorpe’s reputation for sporting excellence. In addition to the exceptional grounds, the School also benefits from a climbing wall, golf course and a clay pigeon shooting range. The sports programme is delivered by a team of specialist coaches who openly share not only their technical knowledge of their sport but also their passion and personal experiences of competing at a high level.

In addition to the competitive fixtures at Cokethorpe, many pupils participate in local clubs and go on to compete in County, National and International competitions. They are supported in all aspects of the demands of playing at the highest level including those that are preparing for professional scholarships at elite clubs.

Elite Athlete Programme

The Elite Athlete Programme is delivered through our partnership with Oxford University. It is aimed at our elite level athletes who are competing at regional standard or above, designed to support them with strength and conditioning, diet and nutrition and sport psychology. At Cokethorpe, we understand that getting the balance right between academic studies and sport performance is vital to a pupil’s future success. This programme is designed to ensure that our Elite Athletes have all the support they need to thrive in this environment.
