Approaches to Learning

A research-informed approach

We tailor teaching to each child, building strong learning skills for life and integrating
the latest educational research to ensure methods are effective and
evidence-based
, fostering a love of learning in every pupil. As one of a select few Microsoft Showcase Schools,
technology enhances (never replaces) great teaching, and ongoing investment keeps our learning environments up to date.

How learning happens

Understanding how children learn is fundamental to our learning vision.
We combine insights from cognitive science, psychology, and educational research to develop evidence-based strategies.

Memory and Retention

Learning involves the process of encoding, storing, and retrieving information. We utilise techniques such as successive relearning and retrieval practice. Retrieval practice and successive relearning strengthen long-term memory and understanding.

Cognitive Load

To enhance our teaching methods, we incorporate principles from Cognitive Load Theory. This theory helps us understand how the brain processes information and the limitations of working memory. We manage working-memory limits by chunking explanations, checking understanding, and adapting teaching to maintain focus.

Metacognition

We help pupils think about their own thinking to improve strategy use, knowledge, and higher-order reasoning. By integrating these principles into our teaching practices, we aim to create a learning environment that supports all learners in reaching their full potential.

Curriculum Overview

From play-based exploration in Pre-Prep to a broad, balanced Prep curriculum and a Senior programme that prepares for GCSEs and A Levels, our curriculum challenges and inspires—with critical thinking and independence at its core.
