Hands-On Farm Experiences

It was Year 4’s and Year 5’s turn to enjoy their days of outdoor learning at the farm, bringing classroom studies vividly to life with hands-on learning.

Year 4 focused on land use, exploring commercial, residential and agricultural areas while comparing natural and man-made features. Pupils considered why land is used in different ways, discussing factors such as land type, water supply, flooding and necessity. Their visit also included weighing lambs, learning about the importance of monitoring growth, and even the opportunity to hold them, making for a memorable and engaging experience. Blue (Year 4, Symonds) shared his thoughts on the experience: “We weighed the lambs and sheep, which was interesting; the lambs were heavier than I expected”. Roo (Year 4, Symonds) enthused: “I loved holding the lambs, they were fluffy but wriggly”.

Meanwhile, Year 5 combined geography and mathematics through practical river studies. Working by the river and a nearby tributary, pupils investigated the many uses of rivers, explored key river features and discussed how they develop along the watercourse. Alfie (Year 5, Gwyn) reflected: “It was fun learning about how the rivers form with the meanders and rock forms”. Ruby (Year 5, Lockwood) commented: “I liked going in the river, I’ve never done it before.”

They then applied their mathematical skills to measure depth, width and water speed before calculating averages from their findings.

Both visits were wonderful examples of curiosity, confidence and collaborative learning beyond the classroom, encouraging pupils to think critically, work together and engage directly with the world around them.
