On Saturday 13 June, we were delighted to welcome 30 Old Cokethorpeans back to School for a special Reunion. Alumni from the 1960s through to the 1990s gathered in The Corinthian Room to reconnect, share memories, and enjoy a sumptuous buffet. Travelling from across the country, from Worcestershire and Lincolnshire to Warwickshire and Devon, it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces return to Cokethorpe.
Guests were welcomed by Tony Baker (1964, Harcourt), President of the Cokethorpe Society. We were also pleased to be joined by the Head, Sarah Squire, allowing many OCs to meet her and personally welcome her to the School that means so much to them.
Peter Green, History Teacher and House Master from 1964 to 1999, joined guests for pre-dinner drinks and shared his own fond memories of Cokethorpe. As those who know Peter will appreciate, there was no shortage of stories, each recalled with his trademark detail and enthusiasm, bringing the School’s history vividly to life.
Following the meal, guests were invited to explore the School and revisit the corridors and classrooms of their youth. Former dormitories have been transformed into bright learning spaces and welcoming art studios; many other areas of the campus have also changed dramatically over the years, and yet they still hold that familiarity. For several OCs who had not returned for many years, walking beneath the Bell Tower offered a striking reminder of how the School has evolved. Areas once occupied by gardens and woodland are now home to the Senior School, Library, Dining Hall and Sports Hall.
One of the highlights of the evening was hearing alumni reminisce about life at Cokethorpe, sharing stories about buildings and traditions from years gone by. Memories ranged from the mystery of the archway that seemingly appeared overnight leading into the Middle Quad, to the old Dining Hall, now home to the Art Department. Guests recalled the pet ravens that once lived on site, the former House Masters’ accommodation, and even the footprint of the old gymnasium, long since disappeared from view outside the Bell Tower windows.
Thank you to everyone who attended the Reunion and helped make the evening such a special occasion. We are grateful for your continued support of the School and for keeping the spirit and memories of Cokethorpe alive for future generations.
