Pupils Go Wild for Conservation with Professor Dickman

Jan 18, 2026

We were delighted to welcome Professor Amy Dickman, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at the University of Oxford, to speak with First Form and Year 6 pupils.

Also joint Chief Executive of Lion Landscapes, Professor Dickman shared insights from her work supporting human-carnivore coexistence in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia.

Originally intending to become a vet, her passion for big cats led her towards conservation, joining WildCRU in 1997. Pupils were captivated by stories from the field, including a particularly hair-raising moment involving a fully grown male lion sleeping on top of her tent in Tanzania.

Her talk explored the complexities of conservation, highlighting the importance of education, community engagement and trust in shaping sustainable solutions. It was an inspiring reminder that science, compassion and collaboration can create meaningful change.
