‘The annual Service of Lessons and Carols at St Mary’s Church, Witney, was a truly memorable occasion, bringing together pupils, staff, and families in a celebration of music and tradition. Beginning with the iconic Once in Royal David’s City, the first verse was sung beautifully by Imogen (Second Form, Queen Anne) on Monday and Lottie (Fourth Form, Gascoigne) on Tuesday; the service unfolded with stunning choral arrangements conducted by Mr Wilson and performed by the Cokethorpe Choir. Lottie said ‘Every school year, I know that the Christmas season has officially started when we have our Carol Service, and this year it did not disappoint! My favourite part is the genuine sense of community among the students, parents, and staff, and I am already looking forward to next year.

Carols have the power to unite us through shared experiences and feelings, and this year’s programme showcased that wonderfully. Highlights included the haunting beauty of Still, Still, Still, an Austrian traditional carol arranged by Philip Ledger, and the charming Sparrows’ Carol by Charles Bennett and Bob Chilcott. Interwoven with these musical treasures were traditional readings, complemented by the congregation’s enthusiastic participation in favourites such as Good King Wenceslas.

While carols are now synonymous with Christmas, their origins lie in dance and celebration, evolving over centuries to become the heart of festive worship. With soaring descants adding depth and drama to the final verses, the evening concluded on a thrilling note with a crash of cymbals before the final carol, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.
A wonderful testament to the magic of music and community.’
