The South Africa Sports Tour 2026 provided an unforgettable experience for the pupils and staff involved, combining high-level sporting competition with opportunities for cultural learning, community engagement and personal growth.
Rich in history, sporting tradition and natural beauty, South Africa proved the ideal setting for a tour designed not only to challenge pupils on the field, but also to broaden their understanding of the country’s past and present.
Beginning in Johannesburg, pupils took on strong opposition from Benoni High School before visiting the Apartheid Museum and the Winne Mabaso Foundation. Time spent with local children, participating in community activities and experiencing traditional South African culture proved a particular highlight for many members of the group.
The tour also included a visit to Mabula Game Reserve, where pupils enjoyed memorable encounters with some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes and crocodiles.
From Johannesburg, the group travelled to Cape Town and Stellenbosch, where a series of challenging fixtures against Strand, Somerset College, Paul Roos Gimnasium and Rhenish Girls’ High School provided valuable opportunities for development and competition. While results did not always fall in Cokethorpe’s favour, both teams demonstrated resilience, determination and significant progress throughout the tour.
Beyond the sporting programme, pupils visited Kayamandi Township, took part in the Cape Canopy Tour and enjoyed the opportunity to watch the New Zealand All Blacks take on the Stormers. The tour concluded with fixtures against teams from Langa Township, where the 1st XV secured an impressive 40-point victory and the 1st XI earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
Throughout the trip, pupils embraced every opportunity to learn from new experiences, gaining a deeper appreciation of South Africa’s history, culture and people. More than a sports tour, the experience reinforced the values of respect, integrity and gratitude, while creating lasting memories and friendships that will stay with pupils for years to come.
