Water, Land, Sky Launches at Cokethorpe

Oct 15, 2026

This year marks the launch of Water, Land, Sky, an exciting new addition to Cokethorpe’s Outdoor Education provision, providing every Prep School pupil with a progressive programme of outdoor learning throughout the academic year.

Built around six themed weeks, the programme is designed to develop key character traits including confidence, resilience, leadership, teamwork and risk competence through carefully planned, age-appropriate experiences. Whether on the water, in the woods or high above the ground, pupils are challenged to apply these qualities in authentic situations, helping them develop independence, strengthen character and build confidence through experience.

By revisiting these themes throughout the year, pupils have opportunities to deepen their understanding and reflect on their personal growth over time. The programme also creates meaningful links between outdoor learning and classroom study, encouraging pupils to recognise how the skills and attributes developed beyond the classroom can support and enrich their academic learning.

We have been delighted by the enthusiasm, curiosity and determination shown by pupils as they embark on this exciting new journey.

Developing Risk Awareness Through Navigate
The first Water, Land, Sky week, Navigate, focused on developing pupils’ understanding of risk through a series of meaningful outdoor experiences.

Throughout the week, pupils were encouraged to assess situations, consider options and make informed decisions while taking part in activities where water safety and awareness were central to the learning experience.

Year 3 pupils took to the water in canoes, learning the foundations of boat control, teamwork and safe decision-making. Year 4 built on these skills through canoeing activities requiring increasing independence and awareness of both their environment and fellow participants. Year 5 pupils progressed to sailing, taking on greater responsibility as they learned to navigate changing conditions and make effective decisions on the water. Meanwhile, Year 6 pupils tackled canoeing and Mega SUP activities that demanded strong communication, leadership and collaboration.

Across every year group, water safety remained at the heart of the programme, helping pupils understand how to recognise hazards, evaluate risks and make sensible choices in dynamic environments. These experiences encouraged pupils to embrace challenge with confidence while appreciating the importance of thoughtful decision-making and personal responsibility.

Connecting Outdoor Learning with the Classroom
A key feature of the programme is its ability to strengthen connections between outdoor experiences and classroom learning.

During Navigate week, Year 5 pupils drew links between their activities and their English studies of Frost Hollow Hall, a novel in which the central character is frequently faced with situations involving uncertainty, courage and risk. Through discussion and reflection before, during and after activities, pupils explored the similarities between the choices made by literary characters and those they encounter themselves.

Whether considering the consequences of stepping onto uncertain ice within the story or deciding how best to approach a challenge on the water, pupils examined how preparation, awareness and good judgement can help individuals manage risk safely and successfully.

These connections help pupils to see that the qualities explored in the classroom are not simply theoretical concepts, but valuable life skills that can guide their own actions, decision-making and personal development.

Looking Ahead to Challenge
The next Water, Land, Sky week will take place in November and will focus on the theme of Challenge.

Representing the Sky element of the programme, pupils will explore resilience, perseverance and teamwork through a range of activities centred on height and personal challenge. Through balancing, climbing and abseiling, they will be encouraged to step beyond their comfort zones, support one another and discover what can be achieved through determination and collaboration.

We look forward to following the next chapter of the Water, Land, Sky journey as pupils continue to grow in confidence, character and capability through these memorable and enriching experiences.
