Our Year 1 class enjoyed a memorable trip to the farm, enriching their learning about owls through a day filled with hands-on exploration.
The children began by venturing into the woodland areas of the farm, where they discovered owl habitats nestled among the trees. They learned about where owls nest, how they hunt, and the other animals that share their environment. Bertie (Year 1, Baker) commented ‘We saw where the owls might live and where predators might be.’ A highlight was dissecting real owl pellets – an exciting (and slightly messy!) way to investigate what owls eat and how their bodies process food.

Inspired by the sights, sounds, and sensations of the farm, the children wrote evocative sensory poems, imagining life as a barn owl perched high in the trees. Their writing captured everything from the cool breeze to the rustle of scampering prey below.
Back at the farm classroom, pupils blended creativity with nature, as they crafted beautiful owl-themed collages using twigs, leaves, feathers, and other natural materials. Florence (Year 1, Symonds) said, ‘We worked in teams to make pictures of owls.’
The trip brought learning to life and left the children hooting with excitement!
