First Form pupils spent a day Cracking Codes and Unlocking History at Bletchley Park recently.
‘When I first heard that we were going to Bletchley Park I was really excited, because I knew this was a place that changed the course of WWII for the Allies. I was interested to see how a war could be fought not only with weapons, but with intellect.
We watched a short film about the importance of the code breakers and in what scenarios they broke the Nazi code to win a battle or to intercept an attack. We also saw a genuine motorcycle that would have delivered messages to war camps and places that needed the information, as they were quicker than trains and more reliable than pigeons. The highlight of the trip for me was seeing an actual Enigma Machine and being allowed to press a button on it! A big thank you to all the teachers who organised and supported this fascinating trip.’
