This week’s Enlightenment Lecture featured Dr Mirko Visserman from the University of Sussex‘s Psychology Department, who delivered a captivating talk on the evolving landscape of modern relationships, titled “New Ways of Finding Love.”
Dr Visserman explored how technology is reshaping the way people meet, connect, and maintain relationships in the digital age. She discussed the growing prevalence of online dating, which offers a larger pool of potential partners than ever before but also presents challenges such as choice overload and decision fatigue.
The talk also delved into the fascinating intersection of AI and relationships, with Dr Visserman highlighting how artificial intelligence and virtual reality could soon redefine intimacy and connection. From the rise of AI chatbots capable of mimicking emotional responses to the potential for virtual dating experiences within the next decade, her insights prompted much reflection and discussion among the audience.
The session was chaired by Henry (Upper Sixth, Harcourt), who described it as ‘an engaging and thought-provoking lecture that captivated both pupils and staff alike.’
Fifth Form Scholars Henry (Gascoigne) and George (Feilden) added:

We particularly enjoyed her exploration of the decline in dating app usage post-COVID, as people increasingly return to in-person connections. The discussion about AI and VR in relationships was fascinating — and left us with plenty to think about!’
The morning concluded with lively questions from pupils across the year groups, covering a range of topics from online dating trends to the ethics of AI companionship.
