Morocco 2025

At the end of the school year, a group of Third and Fourth Form pupils set off on an exciting and inspiring two-week expedition to Morocco, immersing themselves in the country’s culture and communities.

The first day began in the hustle and bustle of Marrakech souks – the labyrinthine markets where almost anything can be found! From there, the group embarked on their first major task: a community project for a local school.

Set against the backdrop of the Sahara Desert dunes, the group received a warm welcome to the town of Tifrit from their host, Brahim, whose family had prepared a feast, accompanied by a seemingly never-ending flow of mint tea! There, pupils helped lay foundations for a new primary school and painted a nearby nursery – crucial work in a region recently affected by flash flooding. Each day, a different pupil led the team, developing leadership and teamwork skills in a real-world setting.

The group then trekked 50 km through the Atlas Mountains, camping along the way and reaching altitudes of nearly 3,000 metres. The trek was tough but rewarding, offering breathtaking views and a chance to experience Morocco’s mountainous terrain. Finally, the pupils enjoyed a well-earned rest in the coastal city of Essaouira, nicknamed ‘the Fridge of Morocco’ by locals. The city’s cooler winds and sandy beaches provided a welcome change. Pupils explored the medina and took part in a cookery class, where they learnt to prepare traditional dishes using tagines.

It was a trip full of adventure, challenge, and cultural discovery – one that left a lasting impression on all involved.
