As part of their history topic on medieval castles, children in Years 1 and 2 visited Oxford Castle and Prison to experience what life would have been like inside a castle in medieval times.
They thoroughly enjoyed ascending the 62 stairs to the top of the tower and exploring the prison cells, but, most of all, throwing rats and tomatoes at each other whilst trapped in the stocks! Our budding historians then explored various artefacts, including bowls, floor tiles, armour and shoes. They then had the not-so-pleasant task of smelling some unpleasant things they would have had in those times, such as mouldy walls, rotting food and even sewage!
It was a truly immersive experience the children loved and learnt a lot from.
